Finding Joy in the Simple Things: Lessons from a Dog and a Stuffed Reindeer

This past Saturday — the one tucked right between the afterglow of Christmas and the whisper of a new year — something beautiful happened. It wasn’t dramatic. It wasn’t loud. It didn’t come wrapped in gold paper or with a grand gesture.

It was just joy. Simple, pure joy.

It started with our pup’s regular grooming appointment. Every four weeks, like clockwork, we drop him off at one of his favorite humans — his groomer. Honestly, she might just be his second-favorite human after us (and I don’t take that lightly). It’s a whole thing. He knows when it’s grooming day. He gets excited. This is his self-care ritual — his version of a puppy spa.

What’s better than feeling fresh, loved, and pampered?

But this time, something a little extra happened. After his spa day, his groomer handed him a tiny Christmas present — a soft little stuffie, festive and adorable. It was a small gift, but to him? It was everything.

He trotted into the house like he was carrying treasure. That little toy clutched in his mouth, tail wagging like it was Christmas morning all over again. And without missing a beat, he jumped up onto his favorite cozy nook by the window, next to his new “buddy” — a big plush reindeer stuffie he’d adopted as his lounging companion.

There he was. Groomed. Gifted. Curled up next to his friends. Surrounded by softness. Radiating happiness.

It was pure joy.

And I just stood there, watching him.
No phone in my hand. No rush. No multitasking.
Just watching joyfully present, fully content, entirely himself.

And in that moment, I thought: Wow. What if we all lived like this?

What if we let ourselves soak up the small, soul-hugging moments in our lives instead of racing past them in search of something bigger or more “important”? What if we let simple gifts — a quiet evening, a thoughtful gesture, a cozy spot by the window — actually fill us up?

What if we allowed ourselves to experience the joy of being pampered, of being loved, of being still?

Because that’s what I saw in him. Not just cuteness. Not just a dog being a dog.
But a reminder.
A tiny living, breathing lesson in how to live fully — in the now.

He didn’t question whether he deserved the gift.
He didn’t worry if he’d earned the cozy spot.
He didn’t overthink how long he had to enjoy it.
He just received it.

He allowed joy.

And somewhere between watching his tail settle and his eyes soften, I realized:
We can experience that kind of joy too.

But we have to choose it.

We have to slow down enough to notice the gifts in our lives — not just the wrapped ones, but the everyday kind. The you-made-it-through-the-week kind. The someone-thought-of-you kind. The this-moment-is-enough kind.

We have to pause and honor the joy of:

🛁 A steamy, luxurious shower that melts away the noise.
📖 A book and a blanket on a quiet afternoon.
☕ A hot mug between your hands with nothing else to do but sip slowly.
🎶 Your favorite song, playing at just the right volume.
🐾 Your pet curling up beside you with nothing but love in their heart.

These are not small things.
They’re soul things.

And just like our pup after his spa day, we deserve to feel cared for, safe, and at peace.

We deserve to receive — without guilt, without hesitation, without rushing off to the next thing.

So maybe it’s time we create our own version of the puppy spa.
Light a candle. Run a bubble bath. Wrap yourself in that robe you save for “special” days. This is a special day.

Or maybe, just maybe, it’s enough to curl up somewhere soft, next to someone or something you love, and just be.

Let your soul exhale. Let your heart smile for no significant reason.

And let the joy in.

Because sometimes, the most profound form of self-care is presence.
And sometimes, the greatest gift is a moment fully lived.

Here’s to finding joy in the simple things.
To know that a soft blanket and a kind gesture can be enough.
To choose moments that feel like love.

With a quiet heart and a grateful soul,
