Finding Joy in Meaningless Tasks
I’ll admit it…
Lately, I’ve been guilty of looking around my office, seeing the growing piles of odds and ends, and thinking, I’ll deal with it later.
Work takes precedence.
Emails need answering.
Clients need support.
Content needs creating.
Everything else? It quietly gets labeled as a meaningless task.
Until one day, I walked into my office and paused.
This room has always been one of my favorite spaces. It’s where I write, dream, coach, create, and imagine what’s possible. Yet instead of feeling inspired, I felt very heavy.
The energy had shifted.
I found myself wondering how on earth all these random bits and pieces had managed to migrate into this room. A receipt here. A book there. Pens that had mysteriously multiplied. Crystal boxes waiting to be put away. Papers that somehow reproduced overnight.
It wasn’t just clutter. It was a postponed decision.
It’s funny how we often convince ourselves that only the “important” work deserves our time. We chase the next project, next deadline, next accomplishment … believing that the little things can wait.
But sometimes the little things quietly become the big things. They slowly chip away at our peace without us even realizing it.
So instead of looking at my office with dread, I decided to try something different.
I set an intention.
I’m going to create magic in the mundane.
Immediately, everything changed.
The task itself didn’t magically disappear. Dust still needed wiping. Papers still needed sorting. Shelves still needed organizing.
But my perspective shifted. Rather than rushing through it or resenting every minute, I became curious.
I noticed the gratitude I felt for the beautiful office we’ve created over the years. I smiled as I rediscovered little treasures I’d forgotten I owned. Laughing at some of the odd places things had landed.
I found myself asking, How can I make this enjoyable?
Music helped.
A favorite cup of tea helped.
Lighting a candle helped.
Opening the windows to let the fresh summer air dance through the room helped.
Suddenly, what I had labeled as a meaningless task became an act of self-care.
Every item I returned to its proper home felt like clearing a little corner of my mind. Each surface I dusted seemed to brighten not only the room but my thinking.
Every decision I made created a little more spaciousness inside me.
That’s the beautiful thing about mindfulness. It doesn’t require extraordinary moments. Mindfulness invites us to be fully present in ordinary moments.
We spend so much of our lives waiting for the “big” moments to feel joyful.
The promotion.
A vacation.
The celebration.
A life-changing opportunity.
But what if joy has been patiently waiting for us in the folding of laundry, the washing of dishes, the pulling of weeds, the organizing of a drawer, or the clearing of an office?
What if the magic isn’t hidden in the destination at all? What if it’s quietly tucked inside the way we choose to experience the journey?
I’ve always loved finding magic in the mundane because that’s where life actually happens.
Not in the highlight reel.
Not in the milestones.
But in the thousands of ordinary moments that quietly make up an extraordinary life.
My office didn’t become cleaner simply because I spent a few hours tidying. It became lighter because I changed the energy I brought into the room.
And perhaps that’s true for all of life.
Very few tasks are truly meaningless. They become meaningful the moment we infuse them with intention.
So the next time you find yourself staring at a task you’ve been avoiding, try asking yourself a different question.
Instead of…
“How quickly can I get this over with?”
Ask…
“How can I find joy while doing this?”
You may discover, as I did, that the magic was never waiting at the finish line. It was quietly hiding in the mundane all along.
Reflection: What “meaningless” task have you been putting off? And how might it feel different if you approached it with curiosity instead of obligation? Sometimes, all it takes is a simple shift in perspective to transform an ordinary chore into an extraordinary moment of mindfulness.
